He was born on April 28, 1924, in Chinsali. At that time, the land was called Northern Rhodesia. His father, David Kaunda, was a missionary and a teacher. His mother, Helen Nyirenda Kaunda, was also a teacher. She was the first African woman to teach in that area. Kaunda grew up in the Bemba ethnic group. He spent his early years learning at the Lubwa Mission.

Kaunda spent many years working as a teacher. He taught at the Upper Primary School and Lubwa. He even worked as a boarding master. In the middle of the 1940s, he moved to Tanganyika Territory. Later, he worked in Southern Rhodesia and in Mufulira. He even worked at the Salisbury and Bindura mines for a time. While he worked, he led a Pathfinder Scout Group. He also served as a choirmaster for his church. These jobs helped him learn about many different people.

Kaunda wanted his country to be free from British rule. He joined a group called the African National Congress in 1953. Later, he started his own group called ZANC in 1958. He was even sent to prison for his political work. After he was released, he became the leader of UNIP. He led a campaign called Cha-cha-cha in 1961. This campaign helped people stand up for their rights. In 1964, Zambia finally became an independent nation. Kaunda became its very first president on October 24, 1964.

As president, Kaunda focused a lot on education. He wanted all children to have a chance to learn. He gave out free pens, pencils, and exercise books. He helped open the University of Zambia in 1966. Many people donated money to help build it. He also helped start other schools like Evelyn Hone College. However, managing the country's money was a hard job. He tried to take control of foreign companies. But in 1973, oil prices rose and copper prices fell. This caused a big economic crisis for Zambia.

Kaunda also changed how the government worked. In 1973, he made Zambia a one-party state. This meant only his party, UNIP, could lead. He promoted an idea called Zambian Humanism. This idea focused on community and trust. But the economic problems made people unhappy. In 1991, a new leader named Frederick Chiluba won the election. This ended Kaunda's long time as president. He lived to be a very old man. He passed away on June 17, 2021.
