Seretse Khama was a very important leader in Botswana. He was born in 1921 in a place called Serowe. His family was part of a royal group called the Bamangwato. His name means "the clay that binds." This was a special name to celebrate peace in his family. At only four years old, he became a king. His uncle, Tshekedi Khama, helped him lead during those early years.

Khama went to many schools to learn about the world. He studied in South Africa and then in the United Kingdom. While in Britain, he met a woman named Ruth Williams. They fell in love and married in 1948. This marriage caused a lot of trouble for his country. At that time, South Africa had laws called apartheid. These laws said people of different races could not be together. The South African government was very upset by the marriage.

The British government made a hard choice about Khama. They did not want to upset South Africa. Because of this, they made Khama live in exile. Exile means he had to stay away from his home. He lived in England for many years. He could not rule his people during this time. However, he did not give up on his goals. He eventually returned to his home as a private citizen in 1956.

Khama returned to politics and started a new group. He founded the Botswana Democratic Party in 1961. This group helped lead the way to independence. In 1966, the land became the independent nation of Botswana. Khama was elected as the very first president.

He worked hard to help his people. At first, the country was very poor. There were very few paved roads or schools. There were only 22 people with university degrees.

Khama helped the economy grow very quickly. The country found valuable things like diamonds and copper. He used the money from these mines to build schools and hospitals. He also helped farmers with their cattle. He made sure the government was fair and honest. Between 1960 and 1980, Botswana had the fastest-growing economy in the world. Khama served as president until he died in 1980. His son, Ian Khama, later became the fourth president of the country.
