He led the country of Zimbabwe for nearly forty years. His life moved from being a teacher to being a revolutionary. People have very different views of his long rule. Some saw him as a hero who fought for freedom. Others saw him as a leader who caused great harm. He was born in 1924 in a place called Southern Rhodesia.

At that time, a small group of white people held most of the power.

His early life was filled with hard work and study. Mugabe grew up in a poor Shona family in Kutama. He was a very quiet child who loved to read books. He worked hard to earn several university degrees. He taught at many different schools in Africa.

While teaching in Ghana, he saw how an independent African state worked. This experience changed his ideas about politics. He began to believe in socialism and African nationalism. He wanted the black majority to control their own land.

In the 1960s, Mugabe became a political activist. He spoke to large crowds about the need for change. The government did not like his ideas. He was sent to prison for ten years between 1964 and 1974.

The war ended, and the country became independent in 1980. It was given the new name, Zimbabwe.

Mugabe held many important roles during his time in power. He was the first Prime Minister from 1980 to 1987. Then, he served as the second president until 2017.

He led the ZANU-PF political party for many years. During his early years, he helped expand schools and healthcare. However, his rule also included very difficult events. Between 1982 and 1987, a campaign in Matabeleland killed at least 20,000 people.

He also encouraged people to take land from white farmers. This led to a very bad economic decline in the country.

By the year 2007, Zimbabwe faced huge problems. The country had the highest inflation rate in the world. This means prices for things went up very, very fast. Many people suffered from a lack of food.

People began to protest against his leadership. In 2017, members of his own party removed him from power. They used a coup to end his long rule. He was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mugabe's story is a big part of how Zimbabwe was formed.
