He has led the nation since 2017. His life began in 1942 in a mining town called Shabani. He grew up in a large Shona family with many siblings. His parents were farmers who cared about politics. Because of his father's political work, the family had to move. They moved to Northern Rhodesia in 1955. This move changed the path of his entire life.

Mnangagwa became very active in politics as a young man. He studied at several schools and even a technical college. He decided to use the name "Emmerson" after reading a book. He wanted to fight for his country's freedom from colonial rule. He joined a group called ZANU to help this cause. He traveled to places like Egypt and China for training. In China, he studied at Peking University for two months. He also learned about military engineering and combat.

During the fight for independence, he led a group called the Crocodile Gang.

This group was meant to help the independence movement. They traveled between towns to recruit new members. Mnangagwa's actions during this time led to his arrest. He spent ten years in prison for his activities. After he was released, he moved to Zambia. There, he studied law and worked as an attorney. He eventually joined Robert Mugabe as an assistant and bodyguard.

After Zimbabwe became independent in 1980, Mnangagwa held many high jobs. He served as a minister for state security and justice. He also served as the Speaker of the Parliament. His time in power included very difficult and controversial moments. During the Gukurahundi, many Ndebele civilians were killed. He was also involved in political violence during the 2008 election. These events remain a serious part of his history. He later became the first vice-president to Robert Mugabe.

In 2017, a big change happened in the government. Robert Mugabe was dismissed from his position. Soon after, the military took control in a coup. This allowed Mnangagwa to become the president of Zimbabwe. He won his first full term in the 2018 election. He was re-elected again in 2023 with 52.6% of the vote.
