Zuma's life began with a strong fight for fairness. He joined the ANC when he was only 17 years old in 1959. At that time, South Africa had a system called apartheid. This system was very unfair to many people. Zuma became an activist to fight against these unfair rules. In 1962, he was arrested and sent to prison. He spent ten years on Robben Island. He was a political prisoner there. He even served as a referee for football games played by the prisoners.

After his time in prison, Zuma had to live in other countries. This is called living in exile. He moved to places like Swaziland and Mozambique. In Mozambique, he helped many people who were looking for military training. He later moved to Zambia to work for the ANC. When the ANC was no longer banned in 1990, he returned home. He quickly became a leader in the party. He served as a deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005.

During his time in office, he made many big decisions. He started a huge plan for national buildings and roads. He also worked on a deal for nuclear power with Russia. However, some of these choices were very controversial. People argued about how he used government money. For example, a court found he used state money to upgrade his home in Nkandla.

His time as president ended in 2018. The ANC asked him to leave his position. He resigned on 14 February 2018. After he left, he faced many legal problems. He was even sent to prison for a short time in 2021. This was because he did not follow a court order to speak to the Zondo Commission. He was later released on medical parole. Even today, he still faces legal trials in court. His story is a big part of South Africa's modern history.
