He was born on 18 June 1942 in a small village called Mbewuleni. His father, Govan Mbeki, was a teacher and a leader in the African National Congress (ANC). This group worked to change unfair laws in South Africa. Mbeki joined the ANC Youth League when he was only fourteen years old. He went to a school called Lovedale Institute. In 1959, he was expelled from school for leading a boycott. Even so, he finished his exams and moved to Johannesburg.

Life became difficult for Mbeki as he grew up. The ANC was banned, so he had to leave South Africa. He spent almost thirty years living in other countries. This time is called exile. He went to England to study at a university. There, he earned a degree in economics.

He also worked for the ANC in London. A leader named Oliver Tambo became his mentor. Mbeki even went to the Soviet Union for special training. He used the secret name "Jack Fortune" while he was there. He learned about politics and how to lead.

In 1994, South Africa held its first democratic elections. This was a huge change for the country. Mbeki was chosen as the deputy president. He worked closely with the famous leader Nelson Mandela. Later, Mbeki became the president of South Africa in 1999.

He wanted to help the economy grow. His government worked to lower public debt. He also wanted to make sure African countries worked together. He helped start the African Union to bring leaders together. He believed in a vision called the "African renaissance."

However, some of Mbeki's choices were very controversial. One big problem was how his government handled HIV/AIDS. His government was slow to give medicine to sick people. They did not start a special program for mothers and babies until 2002. They did not provide certain medicines until late 2003. Studies say these delays caused many preventable deaths.

Mbeki was often called an "AIDS denialist." This means people thought he did not believe the science about the sickness. He often said that poverty was the main cause of the problem. This was a very sad and difficult time for many people.

Finally, Mbeki's time as president came to an end. In 2007, his party chose Jacob Zuma to be the new leader. This caused a big rivalry between Mbeki and Zuma. In September 2008, Mbeki resigned from his job. He did this because his party, the ANC, asked him to leave.

A judge had also made a ruling about political interference. After Mbeki left, Kgalema Motlanthe took over the role. Mbeki's life shows how much one person can change a whole nation. His story is still talked about by people all over the world.
