He served as the president of South Africa from 2009 to 2018. Zuma is also known by his initials, JZ. He was a central figure in the African National Congress (ANC). This is the political party that led South Africa's transition to democracy. His life reflects the intense political struggles of his country. After his release, Zuma lived in exile for many years. He moved to Swaziland and then to Mozambique. In Mozambique, he worked with the ANC's military and intelligence efforts. He also served in Zambia as the head of the ANC's underground structures. In 1990, the ANC was unbanned. Zuma returned to South Africa to join the negotiations for democracy. He quickly rose through the party ranks. He became the national chairperson in 1994. By 1997, he was the deputy president of the ANC. He served as the deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005 under President Thabo Mbeki.

Zuma's path to the presidency involved significant political conflict. In 2005, President Mbeki dismissed Zuma from his deputy position. This happened after Zuma's financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was convicted of making corrupt payments. Zuma was also charged with corruption related to a R30-billion defense package called the Arms Deal.

Despite these challenges, Zuma kept the support of a left-wing coalition. This allowed him to become the president of the ANC in 2007. He won the general election in 2009 and took office on 9 May. His presidency was marked by several major initiatives. He launched the R4-trillion National Infrastructure Plan. He also pursued a nuclear power deal with Russia.

On the global stage, he focused on South-South cooperation. This means strengthening ties between developing nations. He helped bring South Africa into the BRICS grouping.

He was also noted for his policies regarding HIV/AIDS.

However, his second term faced intense scrutiny and controversy. In 2014, the Public Protector found he used state money for his Nkandla home.
