He is best known for leading the struggle against apartheid. Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation. This system privileged white citizens while disenfranchising the Black majority. Mandela became the first Black head of state in South Africa. He served as president from 1994 to 1999. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo. He belonged to the Thembu royal family. His father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa Mandela, was a local chief. After his father died, Mandela was raised by Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo. He grew up in the village of Qunu. There, he spent his time as a cattle-boy. He attended Methodist mission schools to learn English and history. These early years shaped his sense of fairness and rebelliousness.

This was an elite institution for Black Africans. He eventually moved to Johannesburg in 1941. There, he studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand.
