This was an elite institution for Black Africans. He eventually moved to Johannesburg in 1941. There, he studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was the only Black African student at that university. He faced significant racism during his studies. 
His political career began with the African National Congress (ANC). He joined the ANC in 1943. In 1944, he co-founded the ANC Youth League. Mandela wanted to overthrow the apartheid government. He participated in the 1952 Defiance Campaign. He also took part in the 1955 Congress of the People. Eventually, he turned to militant action. In 1961, he co-founded uMkhonto we Sizwe. This group led a sabotage campaign against the state.
Mandela faced severe legal consequences for his activism. He was prosecuted in the 1956 Treason Trial. Later, the Rivonia Trial resulted in a life sentence. He was convicted of conspiring to overthrow the government. Mandela spent 27 years in prison. Much of this time was served on Robben Island. 
Mandela and de Klerk negotiated the end of apartheid. This led to the 1994 multiracial general election. Mandela won the election and became president. 
Mandela's influence extended far beyond South Africa. He served as a mediator in international conflicts. He was the secretary-general of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. He received over 250 honors during his life. These included the Nobel Peace Prize. Many people call him "Madiba" or the "Father of the Nation." He remains a global icon for social justice.
