Zuma's life began with a strong fight for fairness. He joined the ANC when he was only 17 years old in 1959. At that time, South Africa had a system called apartheid. This is the political party that led South Africa's transition to democracy. His life reflects the intense political struggles of his country. He moved from being an anti-apartheid activist to the highest office in the land.

Zuma was born in 1942 in the rural region of Nkandla. This area is in the KwaZulu-Natal province. His father was a policeman who died when Zuma was five. His mother worked as a domestic worker. Zuma did not receive a formal schooling. He joined the ANC in 1959 at age 17. In 1962, he joined uMkhonto we Sizwe. This was the armed wing of the ANC. He was arrested in 1962 for conspiring against the apartheid government. He served ten years as a political prisoner on Robben Island.

He also served in Zambia as the head of the ANC's underground structures. In 1990, the ANC was unbanned. Zuma returned to South Africa to join the negotiations for democracy. He quickly rose through the party ranks. He became the national chairperson in 1994. By 1997, he was the deputy president of the ANC. He served as the deputy president of South Africa from 1999 to 2005 under President Thabo Mbeki.

Zuma's path to the presidency involved significant political conflict. In 2005, President Mbeki dismissed Zuma from his deputy position. This happened after Zuma's financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was convicted of making corrupt payments. Zuma was also charged with corruption related to a R30-billion defense package called the Arms Deal.

Despite these challenges, Zuma kept the support of a left-wing coalition. This allowed him to become the president of the ANC in 2007. He won the general election in 2009 and took office on 9 May. His presidency was marked by several major initiatives. He launched the R4-trillion National Infrastructure Plan. He also pursued a nuclear power deal with Russia.
