He was born on March 3, 1981, in a township called Seshego. His family is Northern Sotho, and his mother was a single parent. After his mother passed away, his grandmother raised him. As a young boy, he joined a group in the African National Congress (ANC). He was very active in this group during his childhood. He even helped by removing National Party posters when he was very young.

Malema worked his way up through student and youth politics. In 1995, he joined the ANC Youth League. By 2001, he was the national president of a student group called COSAS. In April 2008, he was elected president of the ANC Youth League. This election was very heated and had some disorder. He won with 1,833 votes against Saki Mofokeng, who had 1,696 votes. His political career has involved many big changes and disagreements. At first, he was a strong supporter of Jacob Zuma. Zuma was the president of the ANC and later the President of South Africa. However, Malema and Zuma had a major falling out. Malema wanted the country to nationalize its mining industry. He also wanted the government to take land without paying for it. By 2012, Malema was campaigning to have Zuma removed from office. Because of this, the ANC expelled him from the party in April 2012.

After leaving the ANC, Malema started a new political party. This party is called the Economic Freedom Fighters, or the EFF. It is a communist and black nationalist party founded in 2013. In 2014, Malema was elected to the National Assembly. He won 25 seats for his new party in that election.
