The Rhodesian Bush War was a long and serious conflict. It lasted from July 1964 to December 1979.

This war took place in a land called Rhodesia. At that time, the land was not fully recognized by other countries. It was later called Zimbabwe-Rhodesia before becoming Zimbabwe. The fighting involved three main groups of people. One group was the white minority-led government. The other two groups were African nationalist organizations. These groups fought to change how the country was run. This struggle shaped the future of the entire region.

To understand the war, we must look at how the groups fought. The government had a professional military of about 10,800 regular soldiers.

They also used many police reserves to help keep order. On the other side, two main guerrilla groups used different tactics. One was ZANLA, which was the military wing of Robert Mugabe's ZANU. The other was ZIPRA, the military wing of Joshua Nkomo's ZAPU. These groups often fought the government forces in the countryside. Sometimes, the two nationalist groups even fought against each other. They all had different ideas about how to win.

History shows that the tension began much earlier than the 1960s. In the late 1800s, the British South Africa Company took control of the area.

By 1923, the country had a government led mostly by white settlers. In 1965, the leader Ian Smith declared independence from Britain. He did this because Britain wanted the country to have majority rule. This meant more Black citizens would have the right to vote. The white government did not want this change to happen. This decision led directly to the start of the war.

Many facts about the war show how big the struggle was. The conflict was part of the Cold War between world powers.

The Soviet Union gave weapons and training to the ZAPU group. China provided support to the ZANU group. Even North Korea helped by teaching militants how to use explosives. In 1979, ZANLA had about 12,000 guerrillas training in other countries. The Rhodesian military grew to over 10,000 men to meet the challenge.

These numbers show how much effort went into the fighting.

Eventually, the fighting led to a new way of life. No side won a total victory through war alone. In December 1979, leaders met at Lancaster House in London.

They signed an agreement to end the conflict. The country briefly came under British control to hold fair elections. In March 1980, the elections were held under supervision. ZANU won the election, and Robert Mugabe became the first Prime Minister. The country was then officially renamed Zimbabwe. This marked the end of the war and a new beginning.
