He is a painter, a sculptor, a draftsman, and a printmaker. People often call him a central figure in American postwar art. He is linked to several art movements like Neo-Dada and pop art. Johns was born in Augusta, Georgia, on May 15, 1930. He grew up in South Carolina and loved to draw by age three. His stepmother even helped him by buying art supplies for him to use.

In 1954, Johns made a very big change to his art. He destroyed all the artwork he had made before that time. He started making paintings of things that people already recognize. These include flags, maps, targets, letters, and numbers. He wanted to use symbols that the mind already knows. This was different from other artists who focused on personal feelings. His work can look like a real object or just shapes.

Johns uses a special way to paint called encaustic. This is an ancient method where melted wax is mixed with color. The artist applies the wax and then burns it into the surface. This way of working lets him create thick and bumpy textures. He can layer the wax to make surfaces look clear or solid. This technique helps people see his individual brushstrokes very clearly. He used this method for his famous painting called Flag.

Johns does not just make flat paintings for walls. He also makes sculptures that people can look at from all sides. Some of his early sculptures were made from a metal called Sculp-metal. He also used plaster and bronze to make his shapes. He sometimes makes art that looks like real objects from life. For example, he made a bronze sculpture that looks like a coffee can.

He even makes prints using many different machines and studios.

His art has been very important to museums and collectors. In 1958, his first solo show at the Leo Castelli Gallery was a success. The Museum of Modern Art bought three of his paintings then. One of his works, Flag, sold for $110 million in 2010. This was the highest price ever paid for art by a living artist. Johns has received many honors like the National Medal of Arts. He currently lives and works in Sharon, Connecticut.
