He was a sculptor, a painter, and a printmaker. He is known as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His art often explored deep questions about being human. He used different styles like Cubism and Surrealism to show his ideas. Many people find his work very moving and unique.

Making his art was a very careful process for Giacometti.

He often reworked his models over and over again. Sometimes he would even destroy a work to start again. Between 1938 and 1944, he made very small sculptures. Some were only seven centimeters tall. These tiny sizes showed the distance between him and his model. Later, he made his most famous figures. These were extremely tall and very thin. He wanted them to look like a transparent construction rather than a solid mass.

His father, Giovanni, was a well-known painter. His brothers Diego and Bruno also became artists and architects. In 1922, Alberto moved to Paris to study sculpture. He studied under Antoine Bourdelle, who worked with the famous artist Rodin. In Paris, he met many famous artists like Picasso and Miró. He even became a leader in the Surrealist art movement. He lived and worked in Paris for most of his career.

Throughout his life, Giacometti worked with many different people.

His sister and the artist Isabel Rawsthorne were models for him. After he married Annette Arm in 1949, she became his main model. His sculptures of her grew larger but stayed very thin. In 1958, he was asked to make a huge sculpture for a bank in New York. He made four tall women called Grande femme debout I through IV. He did not finish the project because he was not happy with the site. In 1962, he won a grand prize in Venice, which brought him worldwide fame.

Today, people all over the world study and admire his work.

You can see his statues in many famous museums. These include the Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His thin figures can feel lonely or sad to some viewers. They might remind people of lone trees in the winter. His art helps us think about how people feel in a big, busy world. Even after he died in 1966, his influence on art remains very strong.
