He was born in 1861 in Banyuls-sur-Mer. Maillol was a talented creator who worked in many ways. He started his career as a painter. He also worked with decorative arts and tapestry design. Tapestries are large, beautiful cloth hangings. In 1893, he even opened his own tapestry workshop. He was known for making these works with great skill. This helped him gain recognition in France.

Maillol eventually moved away from painting and cloth work.

He became very interested in sculpture in his early 40s. He began making small sculptures out of terracotta, which is a type of clay. Soon, he focused almost entirely on making statues. Most of his mature work focused on the female body. He used a style called classicism to make his art. This style emphasizes stable and calm shapes. He believed that art should not just copy nature exactly.

Maillol's journey as an artist began with hard work. He moved to Paris in 1881 to study art. For several years, he lived in poverty. He applied to the École des Beaux-Arts many times. Finally, he was accepted in 1885. He studied under teachers named Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel. In 1896, he married a woman named Clotilde Narcis. She had worked at his tapestry workshop. They had one son named Lucian in October of that year.

His sculptures are found in many famous places today.

One of his major works is called La Méditerranée. He also made a bronze sculpture called The River. Some of his bronzes are in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. These include Summer, Venus Without Arms, and Kneeling Woman. Many of his works are kept in the Musée Maillol in Paris. This museum was started by his companion, Dina Vierny. During World War II, some of his art was taken by the Nazis.

Experts later worked to return these pieces to France.

Maillol's ideas changed how people thought about modern art. His calm and peaceful statues inspired many other great artists. The sculptor Henry Moore was a big fan of his work. Moore liked the way Maillol used volume and balance. Another artist named Hans Arp was also inspired by his shapes. Maillol's style helped lead the way to new ways of making art. Even today, contemporary artists still look at his work. They use his ideas to talk about the human body and space.
