He makes paintings, statues, and prints. He was born in Georgia in 1930. He grew up in South Carolina. He loved to draw from a very young age.

In 1954, Johns changed his art. He destroyed his old work. He began to paint things we all know. He used flags, maps, and targets. He also painted letters and numbers. These are things the mind already knows. His art can look like a real object. It can also look like shapes and lines.

Johns uses a special way to paint. It is called encaustic. This is a method using melted wax and color. It lets him make thick, bumpy textures. He can even layer the wax. This makes the paint look clear in some spots.

He also makes art you can touch. He makes sculptures out of metal and plaster. He even makes prints. He has worked with many print studios. One of his paintings, called Flag, sold for $110 million. This was a very big amount for a living artist.
