She was known for her bright and flowing art. She often worked on very large canvases. Sometimes she laid her canvas on the floor to paint.

In 1952, she made a new way to paint. She called it the soak-stain method. She mixed oil paint with a liquid called turpentine. This made the paint very thin. She poured it onto the cloth. The color soaked right into the fabric. This made it look like soft water colors. This style helped start a new group of artists. We call this group color field painters. They used large areas of color in their work.

Helen loved to try new things for many years. She made art on paper using ink and crayons. She also made prints.

In 2001, she won the National Medal of Arts. This is a very big honor for an artist. She kept making new art for over sixty years.
