The land around the city is very fertile for growing things. This makes it a central place for Nigeria's rubber industry. People also produce a lot of palm oil here. Local farmers grow many foods to eat, such as yams, plantains, and cassava. These crops help support the many people living in the area. The warm weather and rich soil make the city a vital part of the economy.

The city has a very long and complex history. It was once the main home of the Edo Kingdom. This kingdom was very strong from the 13th century until the 19th century. In 1897, a British military group called a punitive expedition captured the city. During this time, they took many metal sculptures called the Benin Bronzes from the palace. These beautiful artworks are now found in museums all over the world.
