Romanesque art was a grand and shared style across Europe. It lasted from about 1000 AD until the 12th century.

This style was the first to spread throughout Catholic Europe. It reached from Sicily all the way to Scandinavia. Artists used many old ideas to create this new look. They kept round-headed arches from the ancient Romans. They also used barrel vaults and decorative acanthus leaves.

Making Romanesque art involved many different skills and materials. Sculptors carved stone to fit into tight spaces. They often carved scenes onto column tops called capitals.

Painters used very bright, primary colors in their work. We can still see these vivid colors in old stained glass.

Artists also decorated large church doors with stone carvings. These carvings are called tympanums and often show important stories. Figures in these scenes might change size based on how important they were.

This artistic period grew as Europe became more prosperous. In earlier times, art was mostly for kings and monasteries. By this time, art reached many more people. City churches and small village churches were beautifully decorated.

New groups of monks, like the Cistercians, helped spread these styles. Most of the best work was done by skilled lay artists. These were people who were not members of the church.

Many Romanesque designs used patterns to add energy to the art. One very common pattern was the spiral.

Some spirals came from old plant shapes like scrolling vines. Other spirals were more mathematical and came from old books. Artists also loved carving animals that were entwined or twisted together.

These animals might wrap around a column or a capital. Most carvings told stories from the Bible, like Jonah and the Whale. These stories helped people learn through beautiful, moving art.
