Christian art is a special way people use images to share their faith.

These artworks use themes and stories from the Christian religion. Most people in these groups use art to show scenes from the life of Jesus. Some groups also make art of the Virgin Mary or holy saints.

Different groups use these images in their own ways. For example, Catholic and Orthodox groups use many images of saints. Other groups, like Reformed Christians, use fewer images. This is different from religions like Islam or Judaism, where using figures is not allowed.

Making this art involves many different steps and styles. In the past, artists often made mosaics. These are pictures made of many tiny pieces of glass or stone.

In the Byzantine Empire, artists used a style called hieratic. This style did not try to look exactly like real life. Instead, it used simple shapes to show religious meaning. It ignored things like light and realistic proportions to focus on the message. This helped people feel the spiritual importance of the scene.

Christian art has a very long history. The oldest sculptures are small carvings from Roman stone boxes called sarcophagi. These date back to the start of the 2nd century. Early Christian paintings are found in the Catacombs of Rome. These underground tombs show how the look of Jesus changed over time. This process was not finished until the 6th century. After that, the way Jesus looked in art stayed mostly the same for a long time.

As time passed, different cultures added their own touches.

In the Middle Ages, Vikings in places like Denmark and Norway began using Christian art. They carved crosses into stone and wood. They even built Stave Churches with animal carvings on the walls. In Germany, the Cologne Cathedral is a famous example of a large church. Construction on it began in 1248 but was not finished until the 1880s. This shows how long people worked to build great places for worship.

Today, Christian art connects to many things we see in museums.

During the Renaissance, famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci made massive works like "The Last Supper." Now, many people collect old Christian art to appreciate its beauty. However, many modern artists still make art specifically for churches. Artists like Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse have made well-known works for religious spaces. This keeps the tradition of using art to tell stories alive.
