An icon is a religious work of art used by many people. It is common in Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Catholic, and Lutheran churches.

Most icons focus on one or two main figures. These figures are often Jesus, Mary, saints, or angels.

Icons can also show stories from the Bible. They are more than just pictures for these believers. In the Greek language, the word for icon is the same as the word for writing. Because of this, some people call the art "icon writing."

Artists use many different ways to make these sacred images. The most common way is painting on wood panels. They often use a special paint called egg tempera.

Some icons are carved out of stone or cast in metal. Others are made using mosaics or painted on walls as frescoes. You can even find them embroidered on cloth or printed on paper.

However, modern historians trace the tradition back to the 3rd century. Some early Christians may not have used images at all. One idea is that they lacked the land and money needed for art.

As Christians gained more resources, they began to make their own unique art. This helped their faith grow through visual beauty.

There was a difficult time in history regarding these images. From the year 726 to 842, there was a period called the Byzantine Iconoclasm.

During this time, many religious images were destroyed. This happened because people disagreed about whether images were appropriate for worship. After this period ended, the use of icons became a steady and lasting tradition.

The style and subjects of icons have stayed very similar for a long time.

Icons connect to many parts of history and culture. For example, the 4th-century writer Eusebius wrote about seeing images of Jesus and his followers.

Some stories tell of a miraculous image that appeared on a towel.

These stories helped establish the types of icons people recognize today. Even when the Roman Empire changed, Christian art grew more detailed. It became a way for people to express their faith openly and beautifully.
