These artworks show Mary, a very important figure in Christian traditions. Most often, they show Mary with the infant Jesus. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, these images are often called Theotokos. This name means "God-bearer."

These pictures are central icons for many people. They help believers feel a connection to their faith. Artists create them to honor Mary and show her importance.

Artists use many different ways to show Mary. One style is the "Madonna enthroned," where she sits on a throne like a queen.

Another style is the "Madonna of humility." In these works, Mary sits on the ground or a low cushion. Some icons show great tenderness between mother and child. The "Eleusa" style shows the child nestling against her cheek.

Other paintings might show Mary breastfeeding the infant Jesus. This specific type of image is called a "Nursing Madonna."

Colors in these paintings carry deep meaning. Artists often paint Mary's robes in a bright blue color. This blue symbolizes purity, virginity, and royalty. For the most important works, artists used a special blue called ultramarine.

This pigment was very precious. The use of color helps tell the story of who Mary is. It makes the art feel even more special to those who see it.

These traditions have a very long history. The earliest depictions of Mary date back to the 2nd or 3rd centuries.

These very old paintings were found in the Catacombs of Rome. In the year 431, a meeting called the Council of Ephesus gave Mary a special title. This helped the style of the Theotokos grow over many centuries. By the 12th to 14th centuries, these images were very important in many lands. The term "Madonna" became common in English during the 1600s.

Many famous artists have worked on these images. In the West, masters like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael painted them.

In the East, artists follow traditional ways to make icons. Even modern artists like Salvador Dalí have made art about Mary. These works link many different times and places together. They show how people have used art to express their beliefs for hundreds of years.
