His most famous pieces are *The Birth of Venus* and *Primavera*. You can find these masterpieces at the Uffizi museum in Florence. He also painted many religious pictures, including many versions of the Madonna and Child. Some of these were painted in a round shape called a tondo.

Botticelli learned his craft through many different steps.

He was first trained as a goldsmith. This is a person who works with precious metals. Later, he became an apprentice to the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. From Lippi, he learned to draw clear outlines and use soft light. This helped him create figures that looked very gentle. In 1472, Botticelli began running his own workshop. He even took on an apprentice named Filippino Lippi. They often worked together on many different paintings.

Botticelli's life began in the city of Florence.

He was born between 1444 and 1446. His father, Mariano, was a tanner who later became a gold-beater. This job helped the family meet many talented artists. Sandro lived in the same neighborhood for his whole life. He lived in a house on the street called Borgo Ognissanti. He even worked in his own home, which was not very common. His nickname, Botticelli, actually came from his brother Giovanni. It means "little barrel" in Italian.

Many important dates and places shaped his career.

In 1474, he traveled to the city of Pisa to paint. In 1481, he went to Rome to work in the Sistine Chapel. The Pope asked him to paint large pictures called frescoes on the walls.

His most successful years were in the 1480s. During this decade, he finished his large mythological paintings. One of his important early works, *The Adoration of the Magi*, was finished around 1475. This painting included portraits of the famous Medici family members.

Botticelli's style changed as he grew older.

In the 1490s, his work became more personal. He did not follow the new High Renaissance style used by artists like Leonardo da Vinci. Instead, he moved toward an older, more "archaic" style. This style is sometimes called Gothic because of its graceful lines. Even though his reputation faded for a while, people rediscovered him in the late 19th century. Now, we look at his art to understand the beauty of the Renaissance. His work links the old ways of painting to new ideas.
