Pietro Perugino was a famous Italian painter from the Renaissance.

He was born in a town called Città della Pieve. People often called him Perugino because he was from Perugia. Scholars still debate if his family was very rich or quite poor. He likely studied in local workshops in Perugia. He may have also studied in Florence. Some say he learned from the artist Andrea del Verrocchio.

In 1480, Pope Sixtus IV asked him to paint in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. He painted scenes like the Baptism of Christ. He worked there with another artist named Pinturicchio. Later, he decorated a hall for bankers in Perugia called the Cambio.

He painted the signs of the zodiac on the ceiling. He even put a small portrait of himself on a pillar there.

Being an artist was not always easy for him. In one story, the artist Michelangelo called him a bungler. This means someone who is not very skilled.

This work included many figures and is now in different museums. He also painted the Annunziata Altarpiece in Florence between 1504 and 1507.

Perugino was also a very important teacher. He had many students who became artists themselves.

Other students included artists like Giovanni di Pietro. Perugino's style helped shape how many other artists painted. His influence can still be seen in the works of his pupils.

Perugino lived a long and busy life. He married a woman named Chiara in 1493. He was even a leader in the town of Perugia in 1501.
