He was a master of the Rococo style of art. This style is known for being bright, elegant, and light-hearted. Tiepolo was a key member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Many people call him the greatest decorative painter of his time. He was also known as a very able craftsman.

Tiepolo had a very special way of painting. He often made large frescoes, which are paintings made on walls or ceilings. He used a cool palette of colors to mimic real daylight. This made his work look bright and shimmering. He was famous for creating a sense of fluid spatial illusion. This made a flat ceiling look like it had deep, open space.

His life began in Venice in 1696. He was the youngest of six children. His father, Domenico, was a small shipping merchant. After his father died, his mother raised the family. Tiepolo studied under a painter named Gregorio Lazzarini starting in 1710. He also studied the works of many other great artists. By 1717, he joined the official guild of painters.

Tiepolo traveled all over Europe for his work. He worked in Italy, Germany, and Spain. In 1750, he went to Würzburg, Germany. There, he painted a massive ceiling for the New Residenz palace. This painting is called the Allegory of the Planets and Continents. It was finished in 1753. Later, he worked in Spain for King Charles III. He painted the Apotheosis of Spain for the Royal Palace of Madrid.

Art is often a family affair. Tiepolo married Maria Cecilia Guardi in 1719. They had nine children together. Two of his sons, Giovanni Domenico and Lorenzo, were his assistants. They helped him paint many of his large works. His son Giovanni Domenico even became a respected painter himself. Tiepolo died in Madrid in 1770. He is buried in his home city of Venice.
