He was a central figure of the 18th-century Venetian school. His work defined the Rococo style of art. This style is characterized by elegance, wit, and a light-hearted mood. Art historians often describe Tiepolo as the greatest decorative painter of 18th-century Europe. He was also recognized as an exceptionally able craftsman. His ability to transform large spaces through paint made him one of the most sought-after artists of his era.

Tiepolo used specific techniques to create a sense of wonder. He was a master of the fresco, which is a painting made directly on wet plaster. He often created a fluid spatial illusion in these works. This technique made flat surfaces, like ceilings, appear to have deep, open space. To achieve a natural look, he used a much cooler palette of colors than earlier Venetian painters. This choice helped him create a convincing effect of bright, shimmering daylight.

His works often felt like theatrical scenes brought to life.

His career included many different types of art. He was famous for massive ceiling frescoes in palaces and churches. He also painted large canvases, such as his ten enormous works for Ca' Dolfin on the Grand Canal. Beyond large-scale paintings, he was a skilled printmaker. He produced two notable sets of etchings. The first was the *Capricci*, which featured bizarre and fantastical subjects. The second was the *Scherzi di fantasia*, which included mysterious figures and scenes of necromancy.

Tiepolo's life began in Venice in 1696. He was the youngest of six children born to Domenico and Orsetta Tiepolo. His father was a small shipping merchant. After his father died, his mother raised the family through difficult circumstances. In 1710, Tiepolo began studying under the painter Gregorio Lazzarini. He did not just follow his teacher's style, however. He developed a quick and resolute style inspired by masters like Tintoretto and Veronese. By 1717, he had officially joined the guild of painters.

Art was a deeply personal and family business for Tiepolo. He married Maria Cecilia Guardi in 1719. Together, they had nine children. His sons, Giovanni Domenico and Lorenzo, worked alongside him as assistants. They helped him execute his massive commissions. Giovanni Domenico eventually achieved his own independent recognition as a painter. This family connection allowed Tiepolo to manage the enormous workload required by his international reputation.

His fame took him far beyond the borders of Italy. In 1750, he traveled to Würzburg, Germany. He spent three years there working on the New Residenz palace. He completed a massive ceiling fresco titled *Allegory of the Planets and Continents* in 1753. This work featured the god Apollo and included portraits of several real people.

Later, he moved to Spain to work for King Charles III. He painted the *Apotheosis of Spain* for the Royal Palace of Madrid.

This work used allegorical figures to show the dominance of Spain across the globe.

Despite his success, Tiepolo faced challenges in his later years. In Spain, he encountered bitter opposition from supporters of Neoclassicism. This was a new, more stern style of art. Because of this rivalry, some of his works were replaced by those of other artists. Tiepolo died in Madrid on March 27, 1770. Although the Rococo style eventually declined, his reputation as a master remained. He is buried in his home city of Venice at Madonna dell'Orto.
