Tintoretto was born in Venice around 1518. He lived a life full of great energy and ambition. People even called him "Il Furioso" because of his intense style. He used bold brushstrokes and strong, muscular figures in his art. His paintings often look very dramatic and exciting to watch.

Tintoretto did not learn to paint in a traditional way. He had a very short apprenticeship with the famous artist Titian.

They did not get along, and Titian actually spoke poorly of him. Instead, Tintoretto taught himself with great zeal and hard work. He studied how bodies look by drawing live models. He even studied anatomy by looking at cadavers. He practiced by drawing from all angles on blue paper. He often worked through the night to improve his skills. He wanted to combine the drawing skill of Michelangelo with the color of Titian.

He used special methods to finish his many large projects. One way was a technique called prestezza, which means fast painting.

This helped him work quickly and respond to many new jobs. He also used assistants to help him with his work. Sometimes he worked for almost no money to get noticed. He even offered to paint for the cost of materials only. This helped him win important jobs from groups called scuole. These were charitable foundations in Venice that helped many people.

Tintoretto was known for being very clever to win commissions.

Once, he entered a competition to paint a ceiling. Instead of a small sketch, he made a full-sized painting. He secretly installed it on the ceiling before the contest started. Then, he offered it as a gift to the group. This made it very hard for them to say no. He also painted some of the tallest canvases of the Renaissance. These huge paintings were made for the church of Madonna dell'Orto.

His work can still be seen in many famous places today.

Many of his paintings are in museums in the United States and the United Kingdom. Some of his famous works are in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. He painted many scenes for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. These paintings were made to look good in dim light. Even though he died in 1594, his energy lives on. His art shows the power and drama of the Venetian school. He remains one of the most famous painters in history.
