Most people know him by his nickname, Bronzino. This name might come from his reddish hair or his dark skin. He was a master of a style called Mannerism. This style often featured figures that looked very elegant and smooth. His people in the paintings often look calm and reserved. They do not show much emotion or excitement. This look helped set the standard for how leaders were painted for a hundred years.

Bronzino followed a very specific path to become a great artist. He was the son of a butcher in Florence. He began his training with an artist named Raffaellino del Garbo. At age 14, he became an apprentice to the painter Pontormo. Pontormo was a leader of the first generation of Mannerism. The two artists worked together for many years. Bronzino even helped paint parts of the frescoes in the Capponi Chapel. His style was so close to Pontormo's that experts still debate which artist painted certain works.

Much of Bronzino's career was spent serving the powerful Medici family. In 1539, he helped decorate the wedding of Cosimo I de' Medici. After that, he became the official court painter for the Duke. He painted many important members of the court with great skill. One famous portrait shows Eleonora di Toledo and her son, Giovanni.

The painting is famous because the Duchess's dress is so detailed. The fabric looks so real that it takes up more space than the people. Some people even wonder if the dress was real or just an invention of his brush.

Bronzino did not just paint people; he also painted stories and myths. He created many religious works, such as the Deposition of Christ. He also painted allegorical subjects, which use symbols to tell a story. One of his most famous works is Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time.

This painting was made around 1544 or 1545. He also painted portraits of famous poets like Dante and Petrarch. He even painted a portrait of his friend, the poet Laura Battiferri. These works show his ability to handle many different types of subjects.

His influence reached far beyond the walls of Florence. Many of his portraits were copied and sent as diplomatic gifts. This helped spread his style across Europe. In 1563, he became a founding member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. This was an important art academy in Florence. He lived in the house of his favorite pupil, Alessandro Allori, until he died in 1572. Today, his paintings can be found in many places like London, Paris, and New York. His art continues to be studied and admired by people all over the world.
