Jacopo Pontormo was a famous Italian painter from the sixteenth century.

He belonged to the Florentine School of art. Most artists of his time followed the rules of the Renaissance. They painted scenes that looked calm and very steady. Pontormo chose a different path called Mannerism. His paintings do not follow the usual rules of nature. Instead, his people often seem to float in the air. They do not seem to be held down by gravity.

This style makes his work feel very unique and special.

To create his art, Pontormo used many interesting techniques. He often painted people with long, stretched-out bodies. He also used strange, twisting poses for his figures. His paintings use very bright colors that can seem to glow. In some works, he leaves the background very plain and simple. This makes the people in the painting stand out even more.

He also used a style called contrapposto. This means the people in his paintings are in many different, twisting positions. This way of painting makes the whole scene feel like it is moving.

Pontormo was born in a place called Pontorme near Empoli.

He was the son of Bartolomeo di Jacopo di Martino Carrucci and Alessandra di Pasquale di Zanobi. As a young boy, he was an orphan. He worked as an apprentice to learn how to paint. He studied under a teacher named Andrea del Sarto. Later, he went to Rome to see the work of Michelangelo. This trip helped shape the way he painted his own figures. He was often supported by the powerful Medici family.

Many of his most famous works are in Italy.

One masterpiece is The Deposition from the Cross, painted between 1525 and 1528. This large painting is kept in the Santa Felicita church in Florence. Another important work is the Annunciation fresco.

He also painted the Joseph in Egypt series around 1515. Some of his works, like the Supper at Emmaus, are in the Uffizi Gallery. In 1522, he even went to a monastery called Certosa di Galluzzo. There, he painted frescoes during a time of plague in Florence.

Pontormo's art changed how people thought about painting. He did not just copy life as it looked. Instead, he used art to express deep feelings. Some people think his empty spaces show sadness or loss.

He was a very private man who liked to work alone. He once screened off a chapel so no one could bother him. When the people of Florence finally saw his work, they were amazed. His style of twisting figures and bright colors left a lasting mark on art history.
