He was born in Castel San Giovanni di Altura. His real name was Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone. People gave him the nickname Masaccio, which means "clumsy" or "messy" Tom. He is known as the first great Italian painter of the Quattrocento period.

His work helped start the Early Italian Renaissance in painting. He was very good at making people look real. He could show movement and lifelike figures on flat surfaces. This skill made him the best painter of his generation.

Masaccio used new ways to make art look deep and solid.

He used linear perspective to create a sense of space. This uses a vanishing point to make a painting look like a real room. He also used a technique called chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro is using light and color to show shape without outlines. This helped his figures look heavy and three-dimensional. He also used foreshortening to show parts of the body. This was a very new idea for painters at that time.

His career began in the early 1420s in Florence.

He joined the painters guild on January 7, 1422. His first known work is the San Giovenale Triptych from 1422. He also worked with an older artist named Masolino. They worked together on the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne around 1424. Masolino painted delicate figures, but Masaccio painted solid ones. Scholars still study who his very first teacher might have been.

One of his most famous jobs was in the Brancacci Chapel.

A wealthy man named Felice Brancacci hired him for this work. The chapel is in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine. Masaccio painted many frescoes, which are paintings made on walls. One famous scene is The Expulsion of Adam and Eve.

His style had a huge influence on the artist Michelangelo. Even though he died at only twenty-six, his impact was huge. A friend named Brunelleschi said his death was a great loss. His work moved away from the old, fancy Gothic style. Instead, he focused on nature and realism. This helped lead the way for many artists who came after him.
