She lived during the Renaissance, a time of great art. She was a nun at the convent of St. Catherine of Siena. Most women at that time only made small things like tiny paintings or cloth work. However, Plautilla was different because she made huge paintings. She was the first known female Renaissance painter in Florence. Her work shows very strong feelings on the faces of her characters. This helped her stand out from other artists of her time.

Plautilla was a self-taught painter, which means she learned on her own. She did not go to a formal art school. Instead, she learned by copying the work of famous masters. She studied the style of Fra Bartolomeo to learn how to paint. She also copied artists named Agnolo Bronzino and Andrea del Sarto. Because she was a nun, she could not study the human body in a certain way. This meant her male figures often had feminine characteristics. She used these lessons to create her own unique style.

Plautilla was born into a wealthy family in the San Felice area of Florence. Her father, Piero di Luca Nelli, was a successful merchant who sold fabric. Her family came from the Mugello area of Tuscany. She became a nun when she was only fourteen years old. She took the name Suor Plautilla at the convent of Santa Caterina di Cafaggio. She was a very important leader there and served as prioress three times. Her convent became a busy place where many nuns practiced art.

Many of Plautilla's works are kept in famous museums today.

She signed it with the words, "Pray for the Paintress." Another important work is the Lamentation with Saints. This painting is kept in the San Marco Museum in Florence. Experts restored this painting in 2006 to make it look beautiful again.

Learning about Plautilla helps us understand how much women achieved in history. For a long time, many people had forgotten about her great skill. Today, new documentaries and books tell her story to the world.
