He lived in Florence and was a very busy artist. People loved his work because he was great at painting religious stories. He also had a special talent for including real people in his art. He would paint portraits of neighbors or friends into his large scenes. This made his paintings feel like they were part of real life. He led a large, efficient workshop to finish many big jobs.

Ghirlandaio was a master of fresco, which is painting on wet plaster on a wall. He was also skilled at using tempera, a type of paint. He was known for his amazing sense of perspective. This is a way to make a flat surface look deep. He could draw buildings by eye with perfect math.

His journey as an artist began with his family. His father was a goldsmith who made metal garlands. This is where Domenico got his nickname, "Il Ghirlandaio."

He first studied under his father before learning from other masters. He apprenticed with Alesso Baldovinetti and Andrea del Verrocchio. He worked with many famous painters like Botticelli and Perugino. These connections helped him become a leader in Florentine art. He was part of the "third generation" of the Renaissance in Florence.

Throughout his life, Ghirlandaio received many important commissions. In the 1470s, he decorated the Chapel of Santa Fina in San Gimignano.

He also worked in the Tornabuoni Chapel from 1485 to 1490. This chapel features many portraits of important families. He even designed beautiful stained glass windows for these spaces.

His art changed how people thought about painting. He was one of the first to use paint to show gold instead of using real gold leaf.

He was also inspired by Flemish art, like the Portinari Altarpiece. This helped him paint people with more realism. His portrait of an old man and his grandson is very famous. It shows a very kind expression and a realistic face. Ghirlandaio died in January 1494 from a fever. He left behind a huge legacy that changed art forever.
