Domenico Ghirlandaio was a leading figure of the third generation of the Florentine Renaissance.

Born in Florence on June 2, 1448, he became a master of both fresco and tempera painting. Fresco is a technique where artists apply pigment to wet plaster on a wall. Tempera is a method using pigments mixed with a binder, often egg yolk. Ghirlandaio is celebrated for his ability to weave contemporary life into religious narratives. He often placed portraits of real people within sacred scenes. This skill brought him immense popularity and many large, prestigious commissions.

Ghirlandaio managed a large and highly efficient workshop to handle his many projects. This workshop was a family business that included his brothers, Davide and Benedetto. His brother-in-law, Bastiano Mainardi, also assisted with major works. Later, his son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio joined the family business as a painter. The workshop served as a training ground for many talented apprentices. Most notably, the famous artist Michelangelo once studied under Ghirlandaio. This collaborative system allowed the workshop to produce massive cycles of art.

Ghirlandaio's artistic journey began with a foundation in craftsmanship. His father, Tommaso Bigordi, was a goldsmith and a dealer of silks. Tommaso was famous for making metallic, garland-like headdresses for Florentine women. This specialized work earned the family the nickname "Il Ghirlandaio," meaning garland-maker. Domenico first apprenticed with his father before moving on to formal art training. He studied painting and mosaic under Alesso Baldovinetti. He also apprenticed with the renowned Andrea del Verrocchio. These early years helped him build connections with other masters like Botticelli and Perugino.

His career was defined by major religious commissions across Italy. In the 1470s, he decorated the Chapel of Santa Fina in San Gimignano. These frescoes depicted miraculous events related to the death of Saint Fina.

In 1481, Pope Sixtus IV summoned him to Rome. Ghirlandaio joined a team of painters to decorate the Sistine Chapel. He worked on the Vocation of the Apostles and a now-lost Resurrection of Christ. His ability to work on a large scale made him a preferred artist for both religious and civic leaders. An agent for Ludovico il Moro even described him as a very active and creative painter.

Between 1482 and 1485, Ghirlandaio completed a major cycle in the Sassetti Chapel. This work consisted of six fresco scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The cycle included scenes like the Approval of the Rules and the saint's death. In the Sassetti Chapel, he also painted the Adoration of the Shepherds.

This altarpiece showed a new level of realism in Florentine art. He was deeply influenced by the Portinari Altarpiece, a Flemish masterpiece brought to Florence in 1483. This influence helped him capture natural textures and intense light. He even included a self-portrait among the shepherds in this scene.

Another massive undertaking was the Tornabuoni Chapel in Santa Maria Novella. Between 1485 and 1490, Ghirlandaio painted four courses of frescoes around the walls.

These works depicted the lives of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist. The chapel is famous for its many portraits, including twenty-one members of the Tornabuoni and Tornaquinci families.

He even designed a stained glass window for the space. Ghirlandaio's ability to honor his patrons through portraiture made these chapels central to Florentine social life.

Ghirlandaio's technical skills changed how artists approached the canvas. He was among the first to move away from using real gold leaf in paintings. Instead, he used paint to represent the appearance of gold objects. This helped create a more natural look in his works. He also possessed an extraordinary sense of perspective. The historian Vasari noted that Ghirlandaio could draw complex Roman monuments by eye. These drawings were later found to be mathematically accurate in their proportions. His mastery of chiaroscuro, or the use of light and shadow, also set his work apart.

Despite his success, Ghirlandaio's life ended relatively early. He died on January 11, 1494, at the age of forty-four. The cause of death was recorded as a "pestilential fever." He was buried in the church of Santa Maria Novella. He left behind six children, including his son Ridolfo, who continued the family's artistic tradition. While the Ghirlandaio family name eventually died out in the seventeenth century, his influence remained. His workshop and his techniques helped shape the direction of the Italian Renaissance.
