She was born in Cremona in 1532 to a noble family. Her father, Amilcare, wanted all his daughters to be well-educated. He encouraged them to learn many different talents. This included the fine arts, which helped them become good companions. Sofonisba was the oldest of seven children. Six of her siblings were girls. Four of her sisters also learned to paint. Sofonisba became the most famous and skilled among them. Her success helped other women start careers as artists later on.

Learning to paint was a big job for Sofonisba.

At age fourteen, she began studying with a painter named Bernardino Campi. Later, she studied with Bernardino Gatti for about three years. These studies were very important for her growth. Because she was a woman, she could not study anatomy. She could not draw people without clothes in her lessons. This meant she could not paint huge scenes with many people. Instead, she focused on painting portraits. She became very good at showing people's true feelings.

Sofonisba's talent was noticed by many important people.

In 1554, she traveled to Rome to sketch scenes. There, she met the great artist Michelangelo. He saw a drawing she made of a laughing girl. He challenged her to draw a weeping boy instead. She sent him a drawing called "Child Bitten by a Lobster." Michelangelo saw her great talent immediately. He gave her sketches from his own notebooks to study. They worked together informally for at least two years. This guidance helped her become a master of her craft.

Her life changed when she went to Spain.

In 1559, she was invited to the Spanish court. She went there to be a teacher for Queen Elizabeth of Valois. The Queen was only fourteen years old at the time. Sofonisba also served as a lady-in-waiting. Later, she became an official court painter for King Philip II. She had to change her style for these royal portraits. They needed to look very formal and serious. She painted the whole royal family and even the Pope. These jobs made her a very successful artist.

Sofonisba loved to paint her family in many ways.

One of her best works is "The Game of Chess." It shows her sisters, Lucia, Minerva, and Europa. This painting was special because it showed a normal family scene. Most art at that time was very formal. Her work felt more personal and lively. She also painted many self-portraits to show her identity. She lived a very long life and died in 1625. She was 93 years old when she passed away in Palermo. Her paintings are now in many famous museums around the world.
