He was born in Antwerp on March 22, 1599. He was the seventh child in a large family of twelve. His father, Frans, was a wealthy silk merchant. Anthony showed great talent for art at a very young age. By age ten, he began formal training with Hendrick van Balen the Elder.

He eventually became a master in the Antwerp Guild on October 18, 1617.

Van Dyck learned a lot from working in a famous studio. He became the chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens was the leading painter in Northern Europe at that time. Rubens even called the nineteen-year-old Van Dyck his "best of my pupils."

This training helped him learn how to paint with great skill. He also studied the work of Italian masters like Titian. Seeing Titian's use of color helped change his own artistic style. He became an expert at many things, including etching and watercolor.

His life was full of travel to many different countries. He first visited England in 1620 to work for King James I. Later, he spent six years traveling through Italy. While in Sicily, he stayed in Palermo during a difficult plague in 1624.

During this time, he painted a famous series of Saint Rosalia paintings. These paintings showed the saint helping the people of the city. His work in Italy helped him develop a style for painting tall, graceful figures. He used this skill to paint many wealthy families in Genoa.

In 1630, he served as the court painter for Archduchess Isabella in Flanders.

Later, King Charles I of England asked him to move to London. Van Dyck arrived in London in 1632 to be the main court painter. He was very successful at making the aristocracy look stylish and grand. He painted many famous people, including King Charles I and his family. Because of his great talent, the King granted him a knighthood in July 1632.

Van Dyck's work left a mark on history that lasted for a very long time. His style of portrait painting influenced English art for over 150 years. He did not just paint people, though. He also created beautiful paintings about the Bible and ancient myths.

Even today, his influence can be seen in modern art. Some things are even named after him, like the "Van Dyke beard." When he died on December 9, 1641, he was buried in St Paul's Cathedral. This showed just how important he was to his world.
