Velázquez was known for being an individualistic artist. This means he had his own unique way of painting. His work changed as he grew older and more skilled. He started with a style that used very dark shadows. Later, he moved toward a freer way of using bold brushwork.

As a young student, Velázquez learned many important skills. He studied under a teacher named Francisco Pacheco in Seville.

In Pacheco's school, he learned about proportion and perspective. These tools help an artist make flat paintings look three-dimensional. He also studied the classics and looked at art trends. His early paintings were called bodegones, which are kitchen scenes. One famous example is a painting of an old woman frying eggs. He used dramatic lighting to make these scenes look very real.

Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain, in 1599.

His father, Juan Rodríguez de Silva, worked as a notary. Velázquez was baptized at the church of St. Peter. He grew up in modest circumstances but showed talent early. He married Juana Pacheco, the daughter of his teacher, in 1618. They had two daughters named Francisca and Ignacia. He spent much of his adult life living and working in Madrid.

His career included many important jobs and travels. In 1622, he traveled to Madrid to find new work.

King Philip IV liked his portrait and hired him. Velázquez became a gentleman usher at the royal court. In 1629, the king allowed him to visit Italy. He traveled to cities like Venice, Rome, and Naples. During this trip, he began using light gray backgrounds. This change helped his paintings look much brighter and more luminous.

Velázquez left a huge mark on the world of art. His paintings became models for many artists in the 1800s. These later painters were called realists and impressionists. Even in the 1900s, famous artists like Pablo Picasso studied him.
