He was a leading artist during the Spanish Golden Age. This work shows the goddess Venus, who represents love and beauty. She lies on a bed with her back facing the viewer. Her son, the god Cupid, holds a mirror so she can see her face.

This painting is very important because it is the only surviving nude work by Velázquez. It shows his incredible skill with color and light.

Velázquez used a special way to paint the goddess. Most artists before him painted Venus with blonde hair. However, Velázquez chose to paint her as a brunette.

He also used a simple color scheme of red, white, and grey. The grey sheets were actually a deep mauve color long ago. Now, they look more grey because the color has faded over time. He used smooth and creamy brushstrokes to make her skin look bright. The light in the scene comes only from the top left corner.

This painting has a strange mystery called the "Venus effect."

When you look at the mirror, you see Venus's face. This makes it look like she is looking right at you. Some researchers say she is actually looking at the viewer's reflection. Yet, tiny marks in her eyes suggest she is looking away. Velázquez likely did this on purpose to create a scene that could not exist in real life. The reflection in the mirror is also larger than it should be.

Velázquez likely painted this work between 1647 and 1651.

Many experts believe he painted it while visiting Italy. In Spain, painting nudes was very rare and even discouraged. However, people at the Spanish court liked collecting art from other countries. The painting was kept in the homes of Spanish courtiers for many years. In 1813, it was moved to England to hang at Rokeby Park in Yorkshire. It was finally bought for the National Gallery in London in 1906.

Throughout its history, the painting has faced some hard times. In 1914, a woman named Mary Richardson attacked and damaged the work.

It was fully restored and returned to the public. Later, in 2023, the protective glass was smashed by a group called Just Stop Oil. Despite these events, the painting remains a masterpiece. It connects to older traditions of Italian painters like Titian and Giorgione. It continues to amaze people who visit the National Gallery today.
