Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a preeminent Spanish Baroque painter.

He served as the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal. His career flourished during the Spanish Golden Age. Many art historians consider him one of the greatest artists in Western history. Velázquez was an individualistic painter who evolved significantly over time. He began his career using a precise tenebrist style. Tenebrism is a technique using strong contrasts between light and dark. Later, he transitioned to a freer manner defined by bold brushwork.

Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain, in 1599.

His father, Juan Rodríguez de Silva, was a notary. His mother was Jerónima Velázquez. He was baptized at the Church of St. Peter on June 6, 1599. Velázquez showed early artistic talent despite being raised in modest circumstances. He entered a six-year apprenticeship under Francisco Pacheco. This contract was signed on September 17, 1611. Pacheco was a highly learned teacher. He taught Velázquez the classics, proportion, and perspective. These skills allowed the young artist to master complex visual structures.

In his early years, Velázquez specialized in bodegones. These are kitchen scenes featuring prominent still-life elements.

His 1618 work, *Old Woman Frying Eggs*, demonstrates his early skill in realistic depiction. He used dramatic lighting that may have been influenced by Caravaggio. Some of his bodegones included religious scenes in the background. For example, *Kitchen Scene with Christ in the House of Martha* created an ambiguous effect. It was unclear if the religious scene was a painting or a real event. He also produced religious works like *The Adoration of the Magi*. These pieces showed his growing interest in careful realism.

Velázquez moved to Madrid in April 1622.

He initially arrived with letters of introduction to the King's chaplain. Although he did not paint the King immediately, he portrayed the poet Luis de Góngora. In 1623, Velázquez received a command to join the royal court. This came from the powerful Count-Duke of Olivares. After painting a portrait of Philip IV, the King was very pleased. Olivares promised that no other painter would ever paint the King's portrait. In 1624, the King provided 300 ducats to help Velázquez move his family to Madrid. This city became his permanent home.

As a court painter, Velázquez held several official roles. He received a monthly salary of 20 ducats and provided lodgings. He was also appointed as a gentleman usher. In 1627, he won a competition regarding the expulsion of the Moors. This victory earned him a daily allowance of 12 réis. He also received 90 ducats annually for his clothing.

In 1629, he received 100 ducats for *The Triumph of Bacchus*. This was his first mythological painting. It depicts men in contemporary dress honoring a young man on a wine barrel.

In 1629, Philip IV granted Velázquez permission to travel to Italy.

He spent eighteen months visiting cities like Venice, Rome, and Naples. This journey was a crucial chapter in his stylistic development. He began using a light gray ground instead of dark reddish backgrounds. This technique increased the luminosity of his paintings. He produced large-scale works like *Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan* during this time. These paintings used everyday gestures and expressions for their characters. This approach helped him bridge the gap between grand history painting and naturalism.

Velázquez's influence reached far beyond the Spanish court. His techniques served as a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters.

In the 20th century, masters like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí reinterpreted his images. They paid tribute to his iconic compositions. Most of his masterpieces belong to the Spanish royal collection. The best collection is housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Some of his portraits were also sent abroad as diplomatic gifts to the Austrian Habsburgs. His legacy remains central to the study of Western art history.
