He is widely considered the most influential figure of the Flemish Baroque tradition. The Baroque style is known for being highly charged and dramatic. Rubens used movement, color, and sensuality to create his works. His compositions often referenced complex parts of classical and Christian history. This made his art both beautiful and intellectually deep.

Beyond painting, he was a prolific designer. He created cartoons, which are full-scale preparatory drawings, for Flemish tapestry workshops. He also designed frontispieces for publishers in Antwerp. His creative reach even extended to designing his own house.

To create his art, Rubens used several different materials. He was one of the last major artists to use wooden panels as a support. He used these even for very large works. However, he also used canvas for his paintings. Canvas was helpful when a work needed to be sent a long distance. For certain altarpieces, he used a unique method. He sometimes painted on slate. This was done to reduce reflection problems caused by light.

Rubens's early life was marked by religious and political unrest. He was born on June 28, 1577, in Siegen. His parents were refugees from Antwerp who had fled to the Holy Roman Empire. They moved back to Antwerp in 1590. As a young man, Rubens had to work to support his family. He first served as a page to the Countess Marguerite de Ligne-Arenberg. He then began a series of apprenticeships to learn his craft.

His training involved several important masters. He first studied landscape painting with Tobias Verhaecht. Later, he studied with Adam van Noort. Van Noort was a Romanist, meaning he studied Italian masters like Michelangelo and Raphael. Finally, Rubens studied with Otto van Veen. Van Veen was a highly educated humanist scholar. He taught Rubens the idea of the 'pictor doctus,' or the learned painter. This meant a painter should understand art theory and classical literature.

Rubens was an incredibly productive artist throughout his career. The catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé lists 1,403 pieces. This number does not include the many copies made in his large Antwerp workshop. His workshop produced paintings for nobility and collectors across Europe. Rubens was also a famous scholar and a diplomat. His skills were so respected that he was knighted. Both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England gave him this honor.

His influence reached far beyond the walls of his studio. In 1622, he published a book called Palazzi di Genova. This book contained illustrations of palaces in Genoa. It helped spread the Genoese palace style throughout Northern Europe. He was also an avid art collector and dealer. He owned one of the largest collections of art and books in Antwerp. His work connects the worlds of fine art, international politics, and scholarly study.
