He lived during the Italian Renaissance. This was a time of great change in art. Bellini is known for changing how artists in Venice painted. People still honor his memory today. There is even a cocktail named the Bellini in his honor.

Bellini changed art by using a special kind of paint. He used oil paints that dried very slowly. This allowed him to blend colors together perfectly. He could create deep, rich tints and soft shadows.

He also painted beautiful landscapes that looked like real skies. His work made paintings look like a window into a real world. This style was very different from the older tempera method. Tempera was an older way of painting that dried much faster. By mastering oil, he could show light and air in new ways.

Bellini was born in Venice around the year 1430.

For a long time, people thought Jacopo Bellini was his father. Now, historians think Jacopo might have been his older half-brother. He worked very closely with his brother, Gentile Bellini. In 1470, he received his first big job at the Scuola di San Marco. There, he helped paint a scene of Noah's Ark during a flood. His early work was often similar to his brother-in-law, Andrea Mantegna. He spent his whole life creating art in the city of Venice.

Bellini had many important jobs during his life.

From 1479 to 1480, he helped take care of paintings in the Doge's Palace. This was a big responsibility. He was even paid with a yearly pension of eighty ducats. Sadly, many of his works were lost in large fires. A fire in 1577 destroyed many of his historical paintings. Another fire in 1867 destroyed a famous altarpiece in a church. Even with these losses, many of his religious paintings still exist today. They show his skill with many different figures and saints.

Bellini was a master who taught many other great artists.

His students included Giorgione and Titian. Titian became a very famous painter himself. In his later years, Bellini was so busy that he had many jobs to finish. He died on November 29, 1516. He was buried in the Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo. His art helped connect different styles from Northern Europe and Venice. He combined new oil techniques with old traditions to create something unique. His influence helped shape the art of the High Renaissance.
