He was born in the city of Messina around 1429 or 1431. His father, Giovanni, was a sculptor who taught him early on. Antonello's art is special because it blends two different styles. He combined Italian simplicity with the tiny details of Flemish art. This mix helped change how people in Italy made paintings. His work was very influential for many artists who came later.

Antonello learned to paint using a very careful way. He used oil paints to show microscopic details. He could show how light hits or bounces off objects. This made his paintings look very real and lifelike. He also used a sense of calm in his work. The faces in his paintings often look very peaceful. He used these skills to create beautiful, quiet scenes. This style helped make his art stand out from others.

His training began with his father in the Sicofanti district. Later, he likely studied in Rome and Naples. In Naples, he was a pupil of Niccolò Colantonio. Around 1450, he learned the Netherlandish way of painting there. This style was very popular at the time. He may have even met the painter Petrus Christus in Milan. This contact helped him master the use of oil paints. Learning these new ways helped him become a master.

Antonello's life was full of important moments and works. In 1455, he painted the Sibiu Crucifixion. By 1457, he had a workshop in Reggio Calabria. He was married and had a son named Jacobello by then. In the 1460s, he painted the Salting Madonna. He also began making portraits that showed people from the chest up. This was a new art form in Italy. Most painters before him used a different profile pose.

In 1475, Antonello traveled to the city of Venice. He stayed there until the end of 1476. While in Venice, he shared his oil painting skills. He also taught artists how to show calm expressions. Famous painters like Giovanni Bellini learned from his work. He painted the San Cassiano Altarpiece during this time. After his time in Venice, he returned to Sicily. He died in Messina in 1479. His son Jacobello finished some of his last paintings.
