He was a master of the International Gothic style. This style focused on very fine and beautiful details. Gentile was known for looking closely at the natural world. He used light to make his paintings look three-dimensional. This helped his figures look like real, living people. His art had a lasting influence on the Italian Renaissance. Many other painters learned from his careful way of working.

Gentile worked in many different ways to create his art. He often painted large panels or used frescoes. A fresco is a painting made directly on a wall.

He used light to create a sense of depth. In one work, he used a special light effect. This made images look clear like glass. He even showed a realistic night scene. He used the moon and an angel to show light. This was a new way to paint the dark.

Gentile's life began in the Marche region around the year 1370.

In Venice, he met other famous artists like Pisanello. He also worked in Foligno around 1410. He painted the walls of the Palazzo Trinci there.

Gentile was inspired by Mamluk metalwork from other lands. These metal objects often had beautiful Arabic script.

He used these patterns to decorate halos in his paintings. He also put these shapes on the clothes of people. This style is called pseudo-Kufic. It shows how trade brought new ideas to Italy. Even other painters, like Masaccio, used these patterns later. Gentile helped connect different worlds through his beautiful art.
