He is best known for his intense and dramatic style. His work used a special way of lighting called tenebrism. This technique uses bright shafts of light against very dark shadows. It makes a scene feel like a stage play. Many people find his paintings very moving and real. His art helped start the famous Baroque style of painting.

To make his art, Caravaggio worked in a very direct way. Most painters made many drawings before they started a painting. Caravaggio often skipped the drawings and worked right onto the canvas. He used live models to capture exactly how people looked. He did not try to make people look perfect or ideal. Instead, he painted their real flaws and natural details. This made his subjects feel like real living things.

His family moved to a town called Caravaggio to escape a plague. He grew up in a home with very little money. His mother died when he was young, so he started training. He became an apprentice to a painter named Simone Peterzano. Later, he moved to Rome in his twenties to find work. He was very poor in Rome and had no home.

Caravaggio's life was often full of trouble and movement. He was a very touchy and provocative man. He was involved in a fight that resulted in a death sentence. This forced him to flee from Rome to other places. He traveled to Naples, Malta, and Sicily to stay safe. In 1609, he was in a clash that hurt his face. He died in 1610 while traveling from Naples to Rome. No one is quite sure if he had a fever or was murdered.

Even though he lived a hard life, his art lived on. Many artists followed his style and were called Caravaggisti.

Great painters like Rembrandt and Velázquez were influenced by him. His way of painting was so new it felt modern. Today, people still look at his work to see how light works. He showed the world that even shadows can tell a story.
