He was born in Milan. Later, his family moved to a town called Caravaggio. He learned to paint from a teacher named Simone Peterzano.

Caravaggio moved to Rome as a young man. He was very poor at first. He made money by painting fruit and flowers. His style was very special. He used a way called tenebrism. This means he used bright light and deep shadows.

This made his scenes look very dramatic. He also painted people exactly as they looked. He did not hide their flaws. He often worked directly on the canvas. He did not make many drawings first.

His life was often difficult. He was known as a very touchy man. He was involved in a fight that led to a death sentence. This forced him to flee to other places like Naples and Malta.
