A man named Cardinal del Monte asked for it. He loved music very much.

The painting shows four boys in old robes. Three boys play music or sing. One boy looks like Cupid, a figure of love. He is reaching for some grapes.

The boys are sitting very close together. This makes the scene feel private. You can see tiny details. You can see dirt under their nails. You can see their red faces.

Caravaggio used real people to pose for him. This is called "ritrarre dal naturale," or painting from life. He did not use his imagination for the faces. He wanted them to look real. One boy plays a lute, which is a string instrument. His eyes look wet with tears. The boys are singing madrigals. These are songs about love. Some songs might even be sad.
