He lived during the Baroque period. This was a time of grand and dramatic art. Algardi worked mostly in Rome. He was a rival to the artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. While Bernini made very active art, Algardi was more calm.

His work had a sense of dignity. He was very good at making portrait busts. These are sculptures of a person's head and shoulders. He paid close attention to faces and clothing. This made his statues look real and natural.

Algardi made many large works. He made a tomb for Pope Leo XI. This tomb used figures to show traits like wisdom.

He also made a huge marble relief. This piece is called the Flight of Attila. It shows a pope and a leader named Attila. The figures seem to move out from the wall. This work was made for St. Peter's Basilica. Algardi also made art for Spain. He made fountain figures and stone pieces for palaces. He ran a large studio with many helpers. His style helped other artists for a long time.
