He lived during the High Renaissance, a special time for art. He is known as one of three great masters of that age. These masters were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

People admire his work for its clear shapes. His paintings feel calm and balanced. He showed a sense of human greatness in his art. This style is often linked to a way of thinking called Neoplatonism.

Raphael learned his craft in a busy workshop.

He likely trained under a master named Pietro Perugino. By the year 1500, he was already called a master himself. He often used oil paints and varnish to finish his work. He would apply paint very thinly on skin to make it look soft. For darker clothes, he applied the paint more thickly.

His father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter for the local ruler. Raphael lost his parents when he was young. He helped manage his father's workshop as a boy. Later, he spent time in Florence to study new styles. There, he saw the work of Leonardo da Vinci. Raphael learned to use new shapes from Leonardo's famous paintings.

In 1508, Raphael moved to the city of Rome.

Pope Julius II invited him to work at the Vatican. Raphael painted many large works on walls, which are called frescoes. His most famous work is The School of Athens. This painting is found in the Vatican's Stanza della Segnatura. He also worked as an architect during his time in Rome. He worked for two different popes during his career.

Raphael's influence stayed strong for a very long time.

After he died at age 37, his style remained a model for others. In the 18th and 19th centuries, people loved his calm and peaceful style. His art helped start a movement called Neoclassical painting. However, some later groups, like the Pre-Raphaelites, did not like his methods. Even so, his beautiful works remain famous in museums today.
