Raphael learned to paint in a workshop. By the year 1500, he was already a master. He studied the work of other artists to grow his skill. He learned from a teacher named Pietro Perugino. Later, he studied art in Florence. There, he saw the work of Leonardo da Vinci. Raphael used these ideas to make his own art look clear and calm.

In 1508, Raphael moved to Rome. The Pope invited him to work at the Vatican. He painted many large works on walls. These wall paintings are called frescoes. His most famous fresco is The School of Athens.

Raphael ran a very large workshop. Many helpers used his drawings to make art. He died at age 37, but he left behind much beautiful work.
