He was born in the town of Cortona, in Tuscany. People often called him Luca da Cortona. He was known for being a very skilled draftsman. This means he was excellent at drawing. He was also a master of foreshortening. This is a way to make figures look like they move through space. His art focused on powerful truths rather than just looking pretty.

Signorelli worked in many different ways to create his art. He often painted large frescoes, which are paintings made directly on walls. To master the human body, he studied anatomy very closely. Some say he even studied in burial grounds to learn. He wanted to show how muscles and bones move in action. He would sometimes try out new poses to see how they looked. This helped him show the structure of the human form. He used sharp light and dark shadows to make his work stand out.

His career began in the middle of the 1400s. He was likely trained by the artist Piero della Francesca in Florence. His early work showed influences from artists in Perugia. By 1472, he was already painting in Arezzo. In 1474, he moved his work to Città di Castello. He even presented a painting to the famous Lorenzo de' Medici. Later, he worked in Rome and the Vatican Palace.

One of his greatest achievements is in the Orvieto Cathedral. Between 1499 and 1503, he painted huge frescoes in the San Brizio chapel. These paintings show the events of the Last Judgment. The work includes scenes like Paradise, Hell, and the Resurrection. His contract for this job was very detailed. He was paid 200 ducats for the ceiling and 600 ducats for the walls. He also received monthly supplies of wine and corn.

Signorelli's art changed how other famous artists worked. The great artist Michelangelo likely borrowed some ideas from his figures. Another famous artist named Raphael even sketched Signorelli's work. Although he traveled to many places, he always loved Cortona. He was a respected leader in his home town. He lived there until he died on October 16, 1523.
