His life had some hard moments too. He faced family feuds over his lands. In 1474, he narrowly avoided being poisoned by a relative. Despite these struggles, he remained a respected leader. He died in Reggio on December 19, 1494.

As a writer, Boiardo created many wonderful works. He wrote poems in Latin and in the common language. His book *Amorum libri tres* is a famous collection of 180 poems. It describes the different stages of love. His most famous work is the epic poem *Orlando innamorato*. This poem is about brave knights and magic. It mixes two different styles of knight stories together. It was written to entertain the court of Duke Ercole.

Boiardo used a clever way to tell his stories. It is called the *entrelacement* technique. This means he would stop one story at an exciting part. Then, he would start a new story. This kept the readers waiting to hear more. He also used real names from his own life. He took names from his local peasants for his heroes. For example, he used names like Mandricardo and Sacripant. This made his grand stories feel very alive.

Boiardo even designed a special deck of playing cards. This deck was called a Tarocchi deck. The cards showed figures from history and old myths. The suits represented four human passions. These were fear, jealousy, hope, and love. The love suit used arrows as its symbol. The hope suit used vases as its symbol. One surviving deck was sold at an auction in 1971. His work is now seen as a masterpiece of Northern Italy.
